Accelerating Growth and Structural Transformation: Ghana’s Options for Reaching Middle-Income Country Status AgEcon
Breisinger, Clemens; Diao, Xinshen; Thurlow, James; Yu, Bingxin; Kolavalli, Shashidhara.
Ghana is an emerging success story in Africa and in a couple of years will become the first African country to achieve the first Millennium Development Goal of halving its national poverty rate. The government of Ghana has therefore extended its development vision and recently declared the goal of reaching middle-income-country (MIC) status by 2015. To analyze possible pathways and implications of achieving MIC status, this paper examines other countries’ experiences on their way to becoming MICs and emphasizes the important role of growth acceleration, export diversification, and economic structural change in the transformation process. The paper further analyzes Ghana’s growth options and their structural implications using a dynamic computable general...

Closed soilless growing system for producing strawberry bare root transplants and runner tips PAB
Giménez,Gustavo; Andriolo,Jerônimo Luiz; Janisch,Djeimi; Godoi,Rodrigo.
The objective of this work was to test a closed soilless growing system for producing bare root transplants and runner tips of two strawberry clones, using two categories of substrates. The system used corrugated roofing panels of fiber-cement, over which a substrate layer was used as a growing bed. The nutrient solution was pumped from a reservoir toward the upper end of the roofing panels and drained back to a reservoir. Plant growth and development were determined for two advanced strawberry clones, grown in sand or in Plantmax organic substrate. Growth of the stock plants and the number and dry mass of bare root transplants were similar in the substrates, but bare roots differed in their crown diameters by substrate. For number of runner tips, no...

Development according to pubertal stage in Brazilian children and adolescents with short-term diabetes BJMBR
Fernandes,V.T.; Verreschi,I.T.N.; Dib,S.A..
The anthropometric status and metabolic control of 51 recently diagnosed Brazilian schoolchildren with type 1 diabetes (DM1), during the first 5 years of the disease, were compared with those of normal children (60 girls and 132 boys) belonging to the same environmental condition and pubertal stage. Metabolic control was evaluated on the basis of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and HbA1c levels. The criteria of the National Center for Health Statistics were used for anthropometric evaluation. FPG (205 ± 51 mg/dl for girls vs 200 ± 34 mg/dl for boys) and % above upper normal limit of median HbA1c (1.8% for girls vs 2.5% for boys with diabetes) were not significantly different during follow-up. The Z-score of the last height evaluation was lower in the girls'...

Differential patterns of myosin Va expression during the ontogenesis of the rat hippocampus BJMBR
Brinn,L.S.; Pereira Leite,J.; Larson,R.E.; Martins,A.R..
Myosin Va is an actin-based, processive molecular motor protein highly enriched in the nervous tissue of vertebrates. It has been associated with processes of cellular motility, which include organelle transport and neurite outgrowth. The in vivo expression of myosin Va protein in the developing nervous system of mammals has not yet been reported. We describe here the immunolocalization of myosin Va in the developing rat hippocampus. Coronal sections of the embryonic and postnatal rat hippocampus were probed with an affinity-purified, polyclonal anti-myosin Va antibody. Myosin Va was localized in the cytoplasm of granule cells in the dentate gyrus and of pyramidal cells in Ammon's horn formation. Myosin Va expression changed during development, being...

Effects of Protein and Energy Restricted Diet During Lactation Leads to Persistent Morphological Changes on Tibia Growth in the Weaned Pups International Journal of Morphology
Fernandes,Rodrigo M. P.; Abreu,Antonio V.; Schanaider,Alberto; Soares Jr.,Edivaldo R.; Pejanha,Gustavo C.A.; Babinski,Marcio A.; Ramos,Cristiane F..
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of maternal protein and energy restriction during lactation on the body weight and tibiae dimensions of pups at aging. At parturition, Wistar rat dams were randomly assigned to the following groups: 1) control group (C) - free access to a standard laboratory diet containing 23% protein, 2) protein-energy restricted group (PR) - free access to an isoenergetic, protein-restricted diet containing 8% protein, and 3) energy-restricted group (ER) - fed restricted amounts of a standard laboratory diet. At weaning, all pups were separated of dams and received free access to a standard laboratory diet containing 23% protein until 180 days when the rats were anesthetized and sacrificed. The dimensions of excised...

Evaluation of the developmental phases of two mulberry cultivars in the biological and productive performance of. the silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) MV&Z
Porto, Antônio José; Funari, Sílvia Regina Cunha; Dierckx, Sílvia Maria Alves Gomes.
Objective: To evaluate the performance of the silkworm when fed mulberry cultivars in different developmental phases. Material and Method: Developed at the Research and Development Unit of the Agência Paulista de Tecnologia dos Agronegócios da Secretaria de Abastecimento e Agricultura do Estado de São Paulo (APTAlSAA), Gália, Sp, Brazil, between 12/31/1997 and 05/06/1999. The experiment was started when Bombyx mori L. caterpillars in the 3'" instar, were fed two mulberry cultivars (1256/4 and Korin) in four vegetative phases of development (7, 10, 13 and 16 weeks); in the 5th instar, biological features and cocoon production were analyzed. Results: The analysis of each mulberry cultivar in the different developmental phases showed variations of the...

The Effect of Early Post Hatch Feeding Times on the Growth and Development of the Gastrointestinal Tract of Mule Ducklings to Five Days of Age Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Williams,MA; Lallo,CHO; Sundaram,V.
ABSTRACT The present study evaluated the effects of early post-hatch feeding on the growth and development of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of mule ducks reared in the humid tropics to five days of age. A total of 120 newly hatched mule ducklings were selected and randomly assigned to four treatment groups. Each with 30 birds, (T1, T2, T3, and T4) is based on four feeding regimes (feed accessed at 3, 24, 36, and 48 hours post-hatch) for five days. The ducklings were euthanized each day and the parameters: small intestinal samples were processed for histological analysis and histometrical parameters including villi length and width, crypt width and depth, and the number of goblet cells per villus was measured, statistically analyzed using ANOVA and...
